The Table Bay hotel recently assisted Portland Secondary School and its Consumer Studies learners with setting up a modern kitchen to replicate conditions in the bustling hospitality industry.
The hotel did a full upgrade to the Practical room, painting, replacing old wooden worktops with new stainless steel tops, new stoves, microwaves and other electrical equipment.
The relationship between The Table Bay hotel and the Mitchell’s Plain High School first started in 2017, where the first project was to assist the Consumer Studies department, since then the hotel has been involved in several projects to improve various parts of the school.
Creating a positive environment for learning makes all the difference, as learners and teachers at Portland Secondary School have witnessed first-hand.
The School’s feeding scheme also benefitted, with monetary donations used to beautify the kitchen and dining area, a donation of a new fridge, microwave and urn as well as painting and tiling the area.
“As a school located within a working-class community, we strive to give of our best and expose learners to equipment that will prepare them for real life, said Portland Secondary School Principal Ridwaan Williams. “We are thankful that The Table Bay, part of the Sun International group, is our partner in this mission and appreciate their continued support over the years.”
Williams said Portland Secondary School had proudly become known as the school which hosts Consumer Studies teachers from other schools in the area for training workshops.
The Table Bay’s General Manager, Joanne Selby, said Sun International strives to uplift, empower and share value across the communities in which they operate in. “It is always wonderful to get positive feedback about how our CSI contributions have impacted learners and changed lives,” she said. “Who knows, maybe one day some of the learners will be inspired to become chefs, and work in one of our hotels
